Salve for Lymphedema

Lymphedema Salve
Good skin care plays a vital part in the treatment of Lymphedema. Any break in the skin, however small, can be an entry site for germs. The protein-rich fluid in the swollen area acts as an ideal breeding ground for bacteria.

Severe Lymphedema can cause the skin to become thickened and scaly. This increases the risk of breaks in the skin. However, good moisturizing can prevent this.

 Salve for Lymphedema

1 1/2 oz of dried red rose petals
1 1/2 oz dried calendula flowers
8 ounce of castor oil  (cold pressed hexane free)
4 ounces of extra virgin olive oil
1 oz beeswax
10 drops from a Vitamin E capsule

Grind the herbs as fine as possible. Add to the oil

Place the herbs and oils in a glass mason jar with a lid. Place jar inside a crock pot with water that comes up halfway on the jar.  Cook on low. heat until the plant matter begins to lose its color - usually about 2-3 hours. Cool and filter the herbs out of the oils

Melt beeswax in a double boiler. Then add your herb infused oils. Prick the Vitamin E capsule with needle and squeeze out 10 drops into the mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until everything is melted and mixed well.

Pour the oil/wax mixture into small tins or jars. Don't overfill. Allow them to sit until hardened and cool. Be sure to cover, label and date your salve. Use this salve on your affected limb.
