Lymphedema

 What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an incurable medical condition caused by injury, trauma or congenital defects in the lymphatic system. When the impairment becomes so great that the lymphatic fluid exceeds the lymphatic transport capacity, swelling results as an abnormal amount of protein-rich fluid collects in the tissues of the affected area.

Lymphedema is chronic, painful and a potentially debilitating condition with no currently known cure. Over time, untreated lymphedema results in infection, disfigurement, disability and even death.

But lymphedema can be effectively managed. The recognized standard of treatment for lymphedema is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). CDT comprises four interacting protocols applied in two phases (acute and ongoing): manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression therapy, lymph drainage exercises, and skin care.

Due to a lack of awareness, information, and understanding, even within the medical community, lymphedema is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed. Many insurance companies also do not cover CDT or lymphedema supplies so many people with the condition do not get the proper treatment they need.

I have Lymphedema in both feet, both legs, pelvis and abdomen. It started in 1993 when I was 24 years old and I went over 22 years without proper treatment. It has been a very long road fighting to keep my mobility (I was in a wheelchair at one time because of it, I now just use a cane). Managing my Lymphedema is an ongoing routine of pumping, massage, exercise and elevation that can take up to six hours each day. The pain and exhaustion sometimes are overwhelming and I do not go out of the house often and still cannot drive. I am very fortunate to have caring family members who assist with my daily living, some people are not as fortunate. As I find it, I will post useful information and links below.
